Our Decarbonization Initiatives

The Cooperative seeks to decarbonize its building systems and logistics, and drive a cleaner, more resilient supply chain — reducing truck traffic, cutting emissions, and creating green jobs in one of New York City’s most freight-burdened communities.

What We Are Doing

NYSERDA-Funded Medium-duty Electrict Trucks

4 new Mack MDe Class 6 electric trucks and charging stations to be installed in 2026 will reduce carbon and PM2.5 impacts in Hunts Point and the region. Two trucks will be leased to tenants; two reserved for airport pickups, local delivery, and fleet loaners.

Benefits:
  • Reduces delivery costs and emissions for Cooperative members across the distribution network
  • Increases fleet reliability and operational continuity for tenants and partners
  • Positions FFMC as a sustainability leader in NYC food distribution and clean freight logistics
Zero-Emission Micro-Freight

High-capacity cargo quads for last-mile delivery to lower Manhattan receivers will remove vans and trucks from Hunts Point roadways, decarbonize distribution, and enable outbound waterborne freight by providing pier to receiver logistics as well as drayage between the Market building and pier.

Benefits:
  • High-value, low-volume use cases prevalent at the Fish Market are ideal for zero- emission cargo quads
  • Creates new jobs for New Yorkers without driver’s licenses, expanding workforce access
  • Reduces costs and emissions associated with truck-based last-mile delivery in dense urban areas
  • Enables maritime middle-mile freight with a bike lane-friendly pier-to-receiver solution
Waterborne Freight & Pier Delivery

Maritime freight for outbound food & beverage, pier delivery by commercial fishing vessels, and freight ferry service for inbound regional produce will help decongest local roadways and reduce freight-related emissions in Hunts Point. Freight ferries will also enable direct passenger service for tourists, workers, and other visitors to the Hunts Point FDC.

Benefits:
  • Outbound freight consolidation enables cost-sharing for middle-mile and reduces congestion tolling exposure
  • Eliminates truck trips on Bruckner Blvd and local roadways, directly reducing community emissions
  • Pier delivery by commercial fishing vessels reduces congestion on I-278W and associated air quality impacts
  • Catalyzes new commodity movements from the Food Distribution Center to lower Manhattan
